Bella and Yasmin

In the last few years a special visit has become a regular event for the final classes (3A and 5B) at the HBLA Kematen. The students learn a lot about the topics "Black" and "Prejudice" in their English lessons for more than two months. After that they have the chance to find out what it really means to live with a different skin colour and - as a consequence - with prejudice in day-to-day reality. Yasmin and Bella Bello Bitugu both have their origins in Ghana, but they decided to live here in Austria for quite a while. Bella Bello has been here for more than ten years now, and his wife Yasmin came here about two years ago. After discussing their experiences concerning prejudice in general and here in our country they both bring a little bit of African culture to Kematen. Their drumming, which included guest performances by our teaching assistant Catherine and her mum this year, is a highlight which most of the students will never forget (see clip). This also applies to their stories about racism and prejudice here in Austria. None of the students could imagine that there is still so much hatred and hostility against people of a different background here in our country.
